Chlamydia

Chlamydia is the most common STD caused by bacteria. There are at least four million cases a year in the United States.

Symptoms

75% of all infected females and 50% of all infected males will have no symptoms. If symptoms occur, the most common are burning with urination, discharge, and painful intercourse.

Diagnosis

Laboratory tests of specimens from infected area.

Possible Problems

PID (pelvic inflammatory disease) and sterility in women.
Urethritis (inflamation of the urethra) in both men and women.
Eye infections and pneumonia in babies born to infected women.

Transmission

Sexual contact.

Treatment

Special prescription antibiotics for all partners or reinfection will occur.

Prevention

Abstinence.
Mutual monogamy with uninfected partner.
Correct and consistent use of latex condoms.
